Reef |
Location:
North Male' Atoll, south of Girifushi
Description: A spectacular
reef formation, with the entire length on the west side filled
with outcrops, caves and crevices. A large cave at 24 metres
with a swim through at the end called the 'chimney', leading
to the top of the reef.
Depth range: 9 - 27 metres.
Marine life: The ceiling
of the cave adorned with blue soft coral, the sides of the
cliffs and overhangs nourished by strong currents are cluttered
with soft coral and seafans. Large schools of blue-fin jack,
rainbow runner, barracuda and dog-toothed tuna make this a
playground for pelagics. Grey reef sharks, eagle rays and
yellow-back fusilier concentrate here in big schools. Many
species of angelfish, emperor and masked bannerfish swim around
the hard coral on the reef top.
Instructor's comment: Currents
here could be strong and should be respected. A safety balloon
is necessary for making open water safety stops if there is
any current. |
