Location:
North Male' Atoll, south of Meeru
Rating: Medium to advanced
Dive site description:
An outside corner and channel all in one dive. During the
dive you pass the whole selection of reef types; top reef
with slope, caves, corner, big coral blocks and overhangs.
Famous for its beauty.
Depth range: 15 - 30 metres
Type of dive: Medium to
strong drift dive. When currents are strong, beware of rip
currents in the channel.
Marine life: One of the
best in the atoll, it is like a giant aquarium when conditions
are good. On the reef, divers have to elbow their way through
big schools of jacks, oriental sweetlips and others. Further
out, white tipped reef sharks, giant tunas, napoleons and
the occasional grey reef shark compete for your attention.
Schools of up to 40 eagle rays have been photographed here.
On the top reef, you would often encounter a school of the
odd-looking very rare humphead parrotfish, each measuring
about a metre.
Instructor's comment:
If you are experienced, listen carefully to the instructions,
to get the best out of this dive. If not follow your guide
closely and you will see the best of the reef and also know
how to deal with the different kinds of currents. |

Location:
Male' Atoll, southern ocean side of Gulhi Falhu
Rating: Beginner to advanced
Description: A spectacular
wall dive. A section of about 100 metres has fallen away,
leaving a basin with overhangs and caves at a depth of 5 to
30 metres.
Depth range: 3 - 30 metres.
Marine life: Small delicate
purple seafans cover the ceiling of the overhangs, many species
of grouper and soldierfish in the caves. Commonly seen on
this reef are scribbled filefish trumpetfish and freckled
hawkfish. If divers look carefully they may see well-camouflaged
leaf fish. In the caves are white-banded possum wrasse and
cheeked pipefish. Opportunity of seeing larger fish swimming
in the blue.
Instructor's comment: Take
the time to look for little things on offer. While studying
the fauna be particularly careful with buoyancy control, as
many of the overhangs are shallow. Stay out of the overhangs
if not fully in control. The best diving is between five and
15 metres. |
